Guidelines for Preparing Your RV for Winter Storage

rv winterizing tipsIf your winter travel plans don’t include hitting the road in your RV or camper, winterizing steps provide many benefits. A properly cleaned, prepared and stored RV can help you kick off the Spring travel season with a road-ready vehicle. Affordable Storage is a reliable partner helping you get the most out of your RV this winter and beyond!

We put together 5 RV winterizing tips for storage to help you get started. Always follow your owner’s guide, and be sure to check with an RV plumber or service expert if you need help.
    1. Drain the water system. Any water left in the water or waste tanks can freeze and cause damage to your water lines. Add non-toxic RV winterizing antifreeze to prevent pipes and tanks from freezing. Check your owner’s manual for a step-by-step guide on this critical process.
    2. Interior Details. Disconnect your electronics and small appliances. Thoroughly clean your RV appliances, counters, floors, windows, cabinets and table tops. Remove all food items from pantries, refrigerators and coolers. Remove towels and linens, and store these items separately but in a convenient and labeled bin.
    3. Assess and Prep the Exterior. Thoroughly clean awnings, pop-ups, siding, tires and wheels. Seal or re-caulk any cracks or holes on your doors, windows and slides. Check the roof for leaks, and make any necessary repairs before storing. Disconnect and safely remove your RV battery to store in a cool, dry place. These steps will protect your vehicle from the outside elements and pests, and prevent any erosion over the winter storing period.
    4. Cover Up! Consider an RV cover for your camper and tires to add an extra layer of protection from the sun, wind, rain and other winter elements.
    5. Store your RV properly. Driveways might seem like the most convenient option, but that may expose your camper to harsher temperatures and critters looking for a home. Never park your RV directly under trees as tree sap and bird droppings can be very difficult to remove. A storage unit that can accommodate RVs and other large motorhome vehicles could be your best option.
Do you have any other winterizing tips we missed? Let us know! An RV service center can help you assess any additional repairs or recommended tune-ups based on your RV model.
